Gubbio |
THE CANDLES RACE |

Every year, the streets of the town are decorated with colorful flags that represent the three major Guilds: the stonemasons, the traders and the farmers. ‘Three Ceri’ (known as candlestick), which are large wooden poles that each weighs four hundred kilos; represent the different patron saints for each Guild. Hundreds of people gather to help carry the ‘candles’ from the centre of the town, up through the forest path to the Saint Ubaldo Basilica which sits at the top of the hill. This three kilometers race is unique and highlights the deep devotion the citizens of Gubbio hold for the various patron Saints. |

The city is divided in two, the ‘top part’ and the ‘bottom part’ and competes for the ‘Palio’. The division represents the struggle for power that split the city between the XIV to XVI century. There is a competition between choirs and a procession, in medieval costumes, through the streets of the town. |

For the religious festival of Corpus Domini, artists create ‘carpets’ made of flowers, which depict religious iconography. The ‘carpets’, 1500 meters in length, line the streets of Spello and the air is fill with the scent of flowers. |

THE QUINTANA JOUSTING |

Twice a year in Foligno a XVII century Jousting tournament is held. The jousting involves ten horsemen which represent the ten city boroughs. The horsemen need to hook, with their lances, three rings, which are suspended from a wooden statue of a XVII century soldier. A procession of 600 people, in period costume, crosses the town during the evening. There is dancing and concerts with baroque music in the Palazzos and food from the XVII century is served. |

This is a three-day festival. On the Friday, there is the official opening, street bars offer drinks and flag-wavers demonstrate their skills. On the Saturday a historical procession, with thousand of people in costume, representing Guilds, legends and historical events of Gualdo Taldino from the XIV century crosses the town. On Sunday, the festival finishes with a Donkey carts race and an Archery competition. |
